Industry News: Continental Clothing Introduces Carbon Footprint Label

Issue: 2009mar

Los Angeles, California-based supplier Continental Clothing Company USA LLC (UPIC: CONTUSA), working with the Carbon Trust, has launched what the company says is the world’s first Carbon Reduction Label for textile products sold in the United Kingdom. The new label, to be displayed on a range of printed t-shirts and sweatshirts, will show the carbon footprint of the entire life cycle of the clothes from raw materials and manufacturing to consumer use and disposal.

Continental Clothing has spearheaded the footprinting of textile products under the pilot program. The supplier has reduced the CO2 emissions from the manufacturing stages by 90 percent through the use of renewable energy and low carbon-footprint production.

Simon Bliss, coordinator for Continental, says no plans for North American distribution exist. “The U.S. and Canada, being massive geographical and geopolitical territories, will take longer to be able to address these issues in such a direct way,” says Bliss. “However, we anticipate a huge push toward large-scale brands and corporations looking to verify and lower their carbon footprint through verified data.”
