A Lifestyle Of Lounge
By: Audrey Sellers, Associate Editor Issue: 2009may
There’s a lot to love about loungewear, from soft fabrics to easy-breezy styles. It’s time to swap out dressy duds for laid-back loungewear. Instead of standing in line at the movie theater and forking over $20 for a ticket and concessions, savvy consumers are catching the latest blockbusters from the comfort of their couches. About one-third of consumers are opting to stay home instead of going out and three-quarters are even entertaining at home, according to a survey by the Zandl Group. Forget meeting up with friends at the bar—lounging at home is a hipper way to hang out.
Lucky for your clients, loungewear has come a long way from plain white boxers and t-shirts. Now you’ll find styles that are just as suitable for ordering in Chinese food with pals as they are for curling up solo with a good book. “Hoodies are a big part of loungewear. Zip, no zip, tunic length, women’s cut, stripes, custom-lined—the choices are endless,” says Luiza Raposo of Atlanta, Georgia-based supplier Boxercraft (UPIC: BOXER). “There’s also a big retail influence with leggings, fleece minis and cardigans, all of which are new additions to the loungewear category.”
PPB asked Raposo to fill us in on the latest in loungewear. Here’s what she had to say:
On trends: “Plaid is back. Comfortable and durable, the flannel pant is a classic. In the times we’re in, people want what’s known and dependable, and flannel is always comfortable and relaxing. It’s ageless and fits most people.”
On markets: “Schools and teams are big markets. Tourism, hotels, resorts, colleges, souvenir shops and travel are other markets that use loungewear as promotional products.”
On popularity: “End users love loungewear because it’s comfortable and usable. Socially, clothes have become more casual. Americans prefer to wear comfortable styles and loungewear is a reflection of this.”
On versatility: “Loungewear works well in promotions because it translates well into different lifestyles. It’s flexible enough for companies, brands and organizations that want to reach a mass audience.”
On change: “This category has become more sophisticated over the years. Retail influences the industry tremendously now. Each season, suppliers are showcasing the retail trends to better accommodate customers. End users like this about the industry and have come to expect it.”
