Sharing Information Is The Best Use Of Social Media
By: Tama Swan, Associate Editor Issue: 2009aug
The best way to utilize social media is to share information about your company, not its product offerings.
Small business scored a C- in marketing and innovation in this year’s State of the Small Business report offered by the business school at the University of Maryland. Out of six categories, small business only scored lower in one other area—capital access.
One way businesses can improve their score in this area is by taking advantage of social media—a free platform few small companies are taking advantage of. However, experts say thinking of social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc., as just another place to post specials won’t get you anywhere. Instead, use social media to tell your story, contrast yourself with the competition and help customers feel closer to you.
For example, are you the company that gets the latest and greatest technology as soon as it’s released from the manufacturer? Do you annually donate a portion of your profits to charity? Did you originate a particular product or technique? Every small business has a unique story, so make yours the focus of your online marketing.
