Wovens That Work
By: Audrey Sellers, Associate Editor
Issue: 2009aug

As dress codes tighten up, wovens present a polished, professional appearance.

You’ve heard of dressing for the job you want and even dressing like the boss. Now more than ever, people are taking this workplace guidance to heart and trading in casual office attire for dressed-up duds. This is a smart move, considering that 93 percent of executives link attire with promotion, according to a survey by staffing firm OfficeTeam.

“The trend now is moving away from casual attire into business attire,” says Brian Thompson, vice president and general manager, corporate, golf, international and domestic licensing divisions, of Seattle, Washington-based supplier Cutter & Buck (UPIC: CUTT0001). “Many companies are moving away from knit shirts as office appropriate and dressing it up a bit with wovens. This gives a professional, dressed-up look.”

Thompson notes that suppliers are introducing more options such as easy-care and wrinkle-resistant fabrics. “People used to think that wovens are hard to care for, but that’s not the case anymore,” he says.

You can’t go wrong with traditional white and French blue wovens, which are top sellers no matter the style. “These are the strongest colors because they’re the most corporate friendly,” Thompson says. But if your clients want to mix it up, there are lots of variations, such as oxford cloths and stripes.

“End users are looking for a professional appearance, durability and easy care when it comes to wovens,” says Thompson. “They want a shirt that will look nice after many washings.”

He encourages promotional consultants to show wovens as an alternative to knit shirts. “If someone has a casual-Friday hangover, if they’re tired of that look and want to dress it up, wovens are a great way to do it and still stay on budget. There are wovens at all price points,” Thompson says.
