PPAI In Action: PPAI Staff Builds Care Packages For Marines In Afghanistan

Issue: 2009aug

In late July, the staff at PPAI’s Irving, Texas, headquarters held a “Support Our Troops Drive” to gather items for 39 U.S. Marines deployed to Afghanistan. The unit’s commander, 2nd Lt. Brian Pegram, is a friend and fraternity brother of Khris Harris, a project coordinator in PPAI’s marketing department and member of the Association’s community service committee.

In addition to writing letters of encouragement and gathering snacks, drink mixes and personal care items for each unit member, the Association’s employees raised more than $1,600 to purchase Marine-issue socks and underclothes, items that wear out quickly but are not readily available in-country. Extra funds were used to purchase gift cards and thank-you cards for the Marines’ spouses and families.

The packages, weighing nearly 600 pounds in total, are expected to reach the unit by late August.

“I thank everyone on staff for their support of this great community service project. They donated the items, cash and time that made this drive possible,” says Harris. “The Marines we are helping are all of our heroes in one way or another. I am confident that this day, they are each a Marine’s hero in return.”
