Regional News: Michigan Association Announces Inaugural Hall Of Famers

Issue: 2009sep

The Michigan Promotional Professionals Association (MiPPA) has announced the first inductees into its newly created Hall of Fame.

Alvin H. Ellwood Sr., Kenneth Kelsey, MAS, and Howard J. Steinmetz, MAS, were inducted during the opening reception of MiPPA’s Rock Solid Diamond Showcase.

“MiPPA is very proud to recognize these three gentlemen as pioneers in the promotional products industry and our association is grateful for their contributions as members and pillars of MiPPA,” says Donna Hall, MiPPA CEO.

The late Alvin Ellwood was the owner of Wyandotte, Michigan-based distributor Brueckman Specialties (UPIC: BRUEP001) until his death in 1984 when his wife, Rhoda, assumed leadership. Ellwood is considered a legend in MiPPA history. From the time he revitalized MiPPA, formerly known as the Specialty Advertising Association of Michigan (SAAM), he served as the executive director until his death. Industry educational scholarships have been awarded by MiPPA in his honor to association members for the past 23 years.

Kelsey, a partner in Livonia, Michigan-based distributor KelseyPromo (UPIC: KELSEY) has been a dedicated and active member of MiPPA for more than 30 years. He served on the Board of Directors for several years and was association president in both 1979 and 1980. Kelsey also has served on the PPAI Board of Directors and is currently chairman of the PPAI Technology Committee.

Steinmetz, formerly of the The Host Companies, began his career in the promotional products industry in 1961 and continued for 30-plus years. Steinmetz started a fulfillment for the Saginaw Steering Gears “Tilt Wheel” program in Michigan—a program that would send advertising specialties to 30,000 car dealers four times a year to order their new cars with tilt-wheel steering in them. Steinmetz has retired and now lives in Colorado.
