Regional News: Houston Expo Warms Attendees To New Opportunities

Issue: 2009sep

At the Houston Promotional Products Association (HPPA) Hot Stuff EXPO in August, attendees and exhibitors were treated to opportunities for business building, networking and camaraderie.

Paul Lage, MAS, president of Norwood, kicked off the show as the guest speaker at the member breakfast. Lage shared upcoming changes and supplier challenges as well as his personal forecast for the industry.

The tradeshow floor welcomed HPPA’s largest crowd in the history of the show, with 230 booths and 1,250 distributors and suppliers in attendance—a five percent increase over 2008, says Christine Leard, HPPA communications chairperson.

“It really was a super show. Everyone seemed to enjoy the time with the suppliers, and the suppliers felt it was a good turnout and were happy with the results,” says Leard.

Debbi Chrissinger of Pasadena, Texas-based distributor Taylor MacQuen (UPIC: TMACQUEN) says the show more than met her expectations.

“I thought the show was fabulous. Many, many suppliers attended this year and I enjoyed being able to have one-on-ones with my favorite suppliers, and I met new ones as well,” says Chrissinger. “Talking to the suppliers, they also loved the show and it obviously had a much larger attendance than they expected, as many suppliers ran out of their catalogs, special sales sheets and samples. I felt that the suppliers were so happy to see such a great turnout in the slow economy that it had everyone elevated to a higher level of energy.”

Chrissinger adds that she learned more about products and new ideas at this show than from any other show she’s previously attended in 2009.

“I attend many traveling shows and this one was almost like attending a mini PPAI Vegas Expo,” she says. “They even had a new products display area when you entered the show. This is one show I will definitely look forward to and not miss.”
