Industry News: Cintas Founder Farmer Retires As Chairman Of The Board
Issue: 2009oct
Cincinnati, Ohio-based distributor Cintas Corporation (UPIC: CINTP001) has bid farewell to founder and Chairman of the Board Richard T. Farmer, who announced his retirement last week.
Vice Chairman Robert J. Kohlhepp has been elected to replace Farmer as chairman; Farmer will remain on the board and serve as chairman emeritus. The decision was approved at a board meeting following the annual shareholders’ meeting at corporate headquarters.
Farmer founded Cintas in 1968, growing the promotional products distributor from a uniform-and-towel supply company to one of the nation’s largest uniform providers.
“There is no one who can surpass the standard of ethical and intellectual brilliance that Kohlhepp has brought to every position he has held in the company,” says Farmer. “I am confident that he, along with my son, [CEO] Scott Farmer, will see our company to continued success, with our rich culture serving as the foundation of that success.”
Kohlhepp first joined the company as controller in 1967. In 1979, he was appointed executive vice president and in 1984 became president and CEO. In 1995 he became CEO, a position he held until becoming vice chairman in 2003.
