Bags Create Buzz For Social Network
By: Audrey Sellers, Associate Editor
Issue: 2009nov

When Michelle Obama, Oprah and hoards of other high-profile people are on the guest list for an event, the promotional giveaways better fit the occasion. How about logoed bags laden with gifts? This is what MyWorkButterfly.com, a social networking site exclusively for moms returning to the workforce, did last January when it hosted a kick-off event, doling out more than 120 bags to A-list partygoers.

“We had an upscale crowd and a limited budget, and we wanted to make a great impression,” says Co-Founder Terry Starr. “We needed something to showcase our MyWorkButterfly.com logo, as well as a bag that was functional, simple, high-quality and classy, and that had a long shelf life.”

As guests arrived at the home of Malaak and Chris Rock for the launch party, they found the logoed bags situated on a spiral staircase. Inside, recipients were treated to a hand-embellished BUTTERFLY shirt and logoed water bottle. VH-1 kicked in celebrity workout videos and Kathie Lee Gifford donated her music CDs for the bags.

The bags were such a hit at the company launch that Starr and her fellow co-founder, Bradi Nathan, use them as giveaways at conferences and interviews. “We interview many celebrity moms for our site and each time we visit, we bring one of our logoed bags. There is no better way to thank them for honoring the Butterfly community with their presence,” Starr says.

Kick Your Bag Habit
Americans use about 100 billion plastic bags each year, made from around 12 billion barrels of oil. Four out of five grocery bags are plastic, and only 1-2 percent are recycled, according to www.begreennow.com.

A plastic grocery bag can take 15 to 1,000 years to decompose. Over a lifetime, use of reusable bags by one person would save more than 22,000 plastic bags, according to www.reusethisbag.com.
