Accolades: Dohan Honored With Chamber Business Award

Issue: 2009nov

Allen Dohan, president and CEO of Blanchester, Ohio-based supplier The Allen Company (UPIC: ALLEN), was honored by the Blanchester Area Chamber of Commerce Monday night with its Businessman of the Year award.

This is Dohan’s first time to receive the award from the Chamber. He says the award speaks to the efforts and talents of all the employees at his company, which is celebrating 50 years this year and is one of the oldest businesses in the community.

Dohan calls the Chamber “a very important vehicle,” particularly for the small businesses in the center of town. “We’ve been members of the Chamber since they formed. They take an active part in the community here and they’re trying to build up the businesses,” he says.

For Dohan, the award symbolizes a steady success that other businesses in the area have not seen, as well as opportunities for the future. Blanchester is experiencing extremely high unemployment rates, especially in the wake of losing one of the largest employers in the region. At the same time, though, a local elementary school has been named one of the top elementaries in the world.

Though the students are some of the area’s poorest, they and their teachers remain dedicated to education. Dohan says the students who leave that school may likely remain in Blanchester and work as adults.

“I look at that as one of the big success stories and I believe it will help companies like ours,” says Dohan.

Dohan attributes the longevity of The Allen Company to its ability to grow as a supplier. “There are three ways to grow: develop a new product line, get proprietary lines or patents, and mergers or acquisitions,” he says.

Allen has attained the first two through its exclusive offering of CamelBak products, says Dohan. As for the last, though Allen hasn’t been part of the trend, Dohan says “if you do it right, you’ll be successful at it.”
