Industry News: Forum Study Promotes Constituent-Based Leadership
Issue: 2009nov
A new study from the Forum for People Performance Management and Measurement affirms the idea that business success is highly dependent on business leaders fostering a “people-led approach” within their organizations.
The study, Leadership and the Performance of People in Organizations: Enriching Employees and Connecting People, notes that declining trust in management and an increase in the use of technology to make personal connections are factors to consider when determining how to lead.
“These enhanced connections should result in what the study’s researchers call a ‘constituent-based approach to leadership,’” says Michelle M. Smith, CPIM, CRP, and forum president.
The study’s findings reflect what is being revealed in promotional products businesses as well, says Paul Bellantone, CAE, PPAI executive vice president.
“Engagement and enrichment are two big pushes in this industry,” says Bellantone, who is also a forum trustee. “The people-led approach is about focusing on the employee and getting to the root of what drives employees.”
Companies practicing people-centered management and leadership style have seen positive bottom-line results, according to the Forum study.
“This approach successfully balances the needs of employees, consumers, shareholders and the community-at-large and ensures that their needs are met in an authentic and transparent manner,” says Smith.
The Forum for People Performance Management and Measurement is a research center at Northwestern University that develops and shares knowledge about communications, motivation and management so that businesses can better design, implement and manage Employee Engagement initiatives inside and outside the organization.
