Industry News: SBLC Releases Statement On President’s Economic Goals
Issue: 2009dec
The Small Business Legislative Council (SBLC) released a statement shortly after President Obama’s televised speech last week, in which Obama identified priorities relating to the economy and small business.
“We believe many of these provisions have both short-term and long-term benefits for small business, the economy and the nation,” says the council in its release.
The SBLC points out that it was an original supporter of a 1980s tax code provision allowing direct expensing, and continues to work toward increasing that allowance to make sure small-business owners can use it when growing their businesses.
“In difficult economic times, an extra increase in the allowance can be an incentive to make those critical investments now, especially when coupled with a temporary depreciation bonus,” the council says.
The SBLC also reiterates its support for infrastructure investment, believing in its ability to create immediate jobs and stabilize an important sector of the business community, and reaffirms the benefits of programs made available through the Small Business Administration.
“Anything that can be done to get those funds to small businesses sooner and with fewer obstacles is welcomed,” says the council. “New and innovative approaches are needed to address the gap in financing created by the economic downturn, as well as to help small business’ traditional partners, such as the community banks, continue to provide such financing.”
The Small Business Legislative Council is a permanent, independent coalition of more than 50 trade and professional associations that share a common commitment to the future of small business.
