PPAI News: Webinar Addresses Independent Contractor Issues

Issue: 2010feb

Both Washington lawmakers and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have taken a renewed interest in the classification of individuals as employees or independent contractors.

To learn more about existing rules, regulations and best practices—as well as ways to make your voice heard in Washington—join PPAI for a free webinar at 1 pm CST on February 24.

Historically, promotional products distributors have used independent contractors to perform sales services. Throughout the years, the IRS has challenged the classification of salespersons as independent contractors. This webinar will present information critical to business owners because, in addition to the liability for withholding or payment of taxes, an incorrect classification can result in the imposition of interest and penalties by the IRS.

“This webinar is a must-attend event for any PPAI member who engages independent contractors,” says Steve Slagle, CAE, PPAI president and CEO.

“John Satagaj, PPAI’s legal counsel, will present best practices to make an informed decision on whether to engage an independent contractor or hire an employee, to help evaluate whether you conduct current relationships with employees and independent contractors in a manner that might be upheld under scrutiny and to prepare you in the event your relationships are challenged by government agencies.”
