LEAD Participants Schedule Meetings With Legislative Offices
By: Staff
Issue: 2010mar

The schedule for PPAI’s first legislative action day will include visits to nearly 30 offices of Senate and House members from more than 20 states. LEAD, the Legislative Education and Action Day, will be held March 23-24 in Washington, D.C. The trip allows promotional products professionals to educate Congress on industry-critical issues as well as the power, impact and job-generating value of promotional products.

“The PPAI LEAD meeting in Washington is the first such gathering of our members in many years,” says Steve Slagle, CAE, president and CEO of PPAI. “While we had several of our members visit their elected officials in Congress in 2009 with our encouragement and support, we wanted to step out early in 2010 and organize LEAD to address several key legislative issues currently under discussion in Washington.”

On March 23, industry leaders will meet in Washington, D.C., to focus on key issues, legislative trends and meeting guidance. On March 24, those same leaders will head to Capitol Hill to meet face-to-face with lawmakers and their staff members.

“We’ve always felt the most powerful voices elected officials want to and should listen to are those of their constituents,” Slagle says. “PPAI communicates with our U.S. Congress and regulatory agencies in many different ways throughout the year. Having our members join us and take the time to meet with their elected representatives to express their viewpoints on issues vital to our industry is critically important and gratifying.”

In the past two years, several important challenges on healthcare, independent contractors, product safety and other issues have been presented to the industry from state and federal governments.

“2010 promises to be just as busy,” Slagle says. “Several small-business tax initiatives, independent contractor challenges, healthcare legislation and other surprises will confront our members this year. We can’t afford to be complacent. LEAD demonstrates our intent to engage members early and often.”
