Gold Rush In an effort to increase home sales in a troubled real estate market, a Russian property development firm nixed its typical baseball hat giveaway and started gifting each new homeowner with one kilogram of gold instead. The promotion is a way to lower the actual cost of the properties without decreasing the price, according to The Moscow Times. Based on average market conditions during the first quarter of 2010, one kilogram of gold is worth approximately $40,000.
Disbarred Companies now can take product branding a step further with decorative barcodes. New Jersey-based Vanity Barcodes provides stock and custom UPC symbols that are fully functional and far more interesting than standard-issue product identifiers. The company says the designs help businesses take advantage of the little-known marketing potential of decorative UPC barcodes.
Product Toss An event claiming to be the world’s biggest product toss was held in March at the 16th Annual Tampa Pro, a skate boarding competition. Products donated by vendors and sponsors of the skating competition were tossed into the stands where spectators had been divided into big kids, little kids and parents. Products included shoes, shirts, decks, wheels and hats among others. “It can get a little hectic, but we do our best to regulate and make sure everyone gets a little something if possible,” says Ryan Clements, a park representative.
