A breakdown of the richest states in the promotional products industry

Do you know where the millionaires in the promotional products industry are located? Sure, everyone knows the big names that routinely make industry lists and appear in headlines, but there are many more companies tucked away in states across the country quietly turning tidy profits. PPB wanted to know: Where are all the millionaires?

Following is a list of the top 10 states in which PPAI’s millionaires—member companies that generated at least $1 million in revenue during their most recent membership year—reside.

DISTRIBUTORS
10th Most Millionaires: Tie between Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida
These three states have 15 millionaire companies each, including Match-Up Promotions (UPIC: MATCHUP), Helm Promotions (UPIC: HELMINC) and the Peter E. Kleine Co., Inc. (UPIC: PETE0002).

9th Most Millionaires: New Jersey
New Jersey has 17 millionaire companies. Known for high tax rates and cost of living levels, employee salaries typically trend higher in this state than elsewhere.

8th Most Millionaires: Missouri
Missouri clocks in with 18 millionaire promotional companies—that’s 16 percent of the total number of PPAI distributors in the state.

7th Most Millionaires: New York
New York boasts 20 millionaire firms. This is only 11 percent of distributors in the state and one of the smaller ratios of millionaires to total firms on this list.

6th Most Millionaires: Wisconsin
The total number of millionaire distributor firms in Wisconsin is 22, which is almost a quarter of all distributors in the state.

5th Most Millionaires: Minnesota
This state is home to 23 millionaires, including Brown and Bigelow (UPIC: BB1896), Kelly Promotions (UPIC: KELLYPRO) and Carlson Marketing Worldwide (UPIC: CARL0003).

4th Most Millionaires: Ohio
Twenty-four millionaire distributor firms do business in Ohio, out of a total of 142.

3rd Most Millionaires: Illinois
Twenty percent—or 33—of all PPAI distributors in Illinois are millionaire companies, including Go Promotions (UPIC: GOPRO), Jansco (UPIC: JANSCO) and Irving Kannett & Associates, Inc. (UPIC: IKA).

2nd Most Millionaires: California
One of the most influential states in the promotional products industry, California possesses 44 millionaire companies and almost 600 distributors.

The Most Millionaires: Texas
The Lone Star State and small-business mecca tops the list with 50 millionaire distributor firms, which is a relatively small number compared to the almost 500 distributors in the state.

SUPPLIERS
10th Most Millionaires: Tennessee
Seventeen supplier firms in Tennessee book $1 million or more in business each year. This is almost 50 percent of suppliers in the state.

9th Most Millionaires: Florida
Florida has 18 millionaire suppliers making products such as Pilot pens and iconic Dixon Ticonderoga pencils.

8th Most Millionaires: New Jersey
New Jersey, known for its industrial regions, claims 19 millionaires, making everything from umbrellas to smart corporate casual attire.

7th Most Millionaires: Ohio
Ohio has a whopping 23 millionaires—pretty impressive considering it has approximately 60 total supplier firms.

6th Most Millionaires: Missouri
Twenty-four millionaire firms, including magnet makers and cap manufacturers, reside in this state.

5th Most Millionaires: Texas

2nd Most Millionaires: New York

The Most Millionaires: California
Unsurprisingly California, and its many ports of entry, is home to 88 millionaire supplier firms and more than 400 total suppliers.
