Grants For Wellness Program Not Funded
By: Staff
Issue: 2010jun

A grant program established under the healthcare reform law will likely not be funded in 2011 as planned. The program, which was created for small businesses to obtain federal funds to create wellness programs for their employees, was supposed to start in October with the beginning of the federal government fiscal year 2011.

Funding for the grant program has gotten caught up in a bigger dispute over the budgetary impact analysis of the law before it was passed. Congressional Republicans say the proponents failed to include scores of new programs such as the wellness program grants when they compiled their cost estimates for the healthcare reform proposal.

The Obama administration will likely not ask for funding for fiscal year 2011 for a variety of new programs created by the new law, including the wellness grants, which will make it up to Congress to decide. Given Congress’s past track record on funding the government on time for the fiscal year, it may be a while before we know whether the grant program will get its money.
