Last week in conjuction with the PPAI Leadership Conference, the Product Responsibility Action Group (PRAG) held a first face-to-face meeting.
The group, led by Gene Geiger, MAS, president of Lewiston, Maine, distributor Geiger (UPIC: geiger), analyzed the issues surrounding product safety and came to a consensus on an agenda of specific tasks and actions going forward to help the industry achieve and maintain compliance. Sue DeRagon, associate director for toys and premiums with Specialized Technology Resources (STR), a product testing lab, was on hand to advise the group.
“Reporting to PPAI’s board, our group will make recommendations regarding how PPAI can help its members deal with the many aspects of product responsibility—products that are safe to use, made in decent working conditions and respect the environment,” Geiger says. “Our current emphasis is how we deal with the burgeoning federal and state product safety requirements.”
Last week’s meeting was a productive start to that effort, he adds. PRAG will be recommending a number of steps PPAI can take to help its members deal with CPSIA requirements.
“There are few things that are more critical to the future of our industry,” Geiger says. “PPAI’s role with product safety will be central to our suppliers and distributors being able to deal with the complex legal and regulatory issues— and deliver the safe products that our customers are demanding.”
