PPAI Delivers Letter To Repeal 1099 Requirements To White House
By: Staff
Issue: 2010jul

PPAI’s representatives were invited to the White House on July 7 to deliver and discuss a letter from Steve Slagle, CAE, PPAI’s president and CEO, discussing repeal of the IRS Form 1099 requirements for small business.

“On behalf of the Promotional Products Association International (PPAI), I urge you to support repeal of a recently enacted law that requires businesses to issue tax information reporting forms, known as Forms 1099, to other businesses for the payments made for goods and services received the businesses,” Slagle says in the letter. “Our industry consists primarily of small businesses, but the nature of our business means that even the smallest of our distributors can deal with a large number of suppliers over the year to complete and fulfill small orders for promotional products. The difficulty in complying with the requirement of the law cannot be overestimated.”

Copies of Slagle’s letter were given to and discussed with representatives from the White House Office of Health Reform and the White House Office of Public Engagement, as well as representatives from the Internal Revenue Service and the Small Business Administration.

Without this repeal, companies must submit IRS Form 1099 for all goods and services purchased in excess of $600. This could even include such typical business transations as utility bills, airline tickets and car rentals. Members are encouraged to speak out on this issue with their own Congressional representatives. To do so, go to PPAI Law and follow the instructions.
